As you reach out for that bottle of lotion or that jar of your favourite night cream, have you ever wondered if your skin care product is doing you more harm than good? While you’ve been relying on your ‘trusted’ products to give you that skin and look you’ve been wishing to get, do you know that most skin care products are actually packed with dangerous ingredients that can do permanent damage to your skin if used over a period of time? Here’s a list of the top 6 dangerous ingredients that can be found in skin care products:
1. Parabens:
Parabens are used to preserve a product for
long and increase its shelf-life. While they let you enjoy a product for
longer, these antimicrobial chemicals actually have harmful effects and can
disrupt the functioning of your hormones. Products that mostly contain parabens
are moisturisers, anti-ageing creams, fragranced products and foundations.
Artificial and cosmetic fragrances contain
neurotoxins that can cause various allergies in people. In fact, neurotoxins
are among the top five allergens in the world. Cosmetic fragrances also contain
petroleum or coal that cause harmful skin irritations. Most companies go for
cosmetic fragrances as these are cheaper and easier to use. So if your product
lists fragrance as part of ‘ingredients’, or of it doesn’t mention ‘natural
essential oils’, it means you’ve got a cosmetic fragrance.
3.
Phthalates:
These are mostly found in synthetic
fragrances to make your fragrances stronger and last longer. Phthalates disrupt
your hormones and can alter the development of genitals. Most common products
that contain phthalates are deodorants, synthetic fragrances and other products
that may be too full of fragrances. Other products that contain this ingredient
are nail-paints and baby skin care products.
4.
Petrochemicals:
Petrochemicals in your
skin care products can lead to cancer. Most companies use petrochemicals in
skin care products because they increase the shelf life and kill unwanted
bacteria. If your ingredient list reads ingredients as fragrances, mineral
oils, alcohol and synthetic preservatives, you are using a product that
contains some form of petrochemicals. Most common products that contain
petrochemicals are moisturisers and face creams.
5.
Urea:
Urea is most commonly used as a
preservative and can significantly increase your risk for contact dermatitis
which is a reaction that results from exposure to allergens or irritants. Urea
is mainly used to retain the moisturising effect in a product and also helps
maintain the pH balance, making it easier to add certain ingredients to a
formula. The most common products containing urea are moisturisers, facial
cleansers, after-shaves, mascara, nail polishes, lip balms, foundations, eye
creams, body lotions, anti-aging creams, shampoos and conditioners.
6. Synthetic
colors:
Synthetic colours are mostly labelled as
FD&C or D&C, followed by a colour and number. These are made from coal
tar and contain heavy metal salts that may deposit toxins on your skin, causing
skin irritation and allergies. These are also known to cause cancer.
