Back To Basic

How do you prepare your face before applying your makeup? Is it just putting on a powder, or foundation first or something else? Here's some tips to achieve your best flawless look.
Before putting anything on your skin make sure that your face is clean, you can do your daily skin care routine at this time. Don't forget to apply a moisturizer of your choice, if you're thinking 'I have an oily skin, why on earth would i put moisturizer, it will make my skin even more oily throughout the day' you're definitely wrong. Oily skin also need a moisturizer to moisturizes the skin. Just make sure that it's oil free and apply a generous amount of it. After you cleanse your face and apply a moisturizer, your face is ready for the makeup.
*The products which i will mention is not a super cheap products, because they're awesome. And yes i'm willing to spend my money for those. I'm quoting Michelle Phan here, 'If you put a cheaply made products to your skin, it might break you out'. And remember, these are the basic. You apply it directly onto your face, so you cant go cheap. But you can go cheap on eyeliner, or lip product. But not eyeshadow, because if you buy a cheaply made eyeshadow it might not be as pigmented as the expensive one. But if the color is vibrant, then that's fine.

Step 1: Prime
Apply a pea size of your favorite face primer. If you don't know what it is, it is a liquid that you put on your face before putting a foundation. Now, if you apply your foundation without a primer your pores will suck up the foundation and it's stuck there. But if you apply a primer it will create a barrier or a second skin so that the foundation won't directly 'touch' your skin so that it wont clog your pores.
Suggestions:

  • Tarte Poreless 12hr Perfecting Primer

You can get it from tartecosmetics.com for $30.00

  • Sephora Perfecting Ultra-Smoothing Primer (what i've been using)

I have oily skin and i've been using this and loving it so much. It doesn't clog my pores and doesn't make my skin look even more oily like the Smashbox one. You can get it from sephora.com for $15.00

Step 2: Cover
*if you want a full coverage like for prom, wedding, or any special occasion use a liquid foundation. Applying it with a stippling brush will make your face look barbie-flawless. If you apply it with a flat foundation brush will create that flawless look but not overwhelming. Now if you want a full coverage don't use a sponge, because sponge will suck up the foundation so when you're applying it onto your face it wont covers much.
*If you want a medium coverage like for daily activities either school or just going to the mall use a BB cream, because bb cream is a lot lighter than foundation but still give you a little coverage. This beauty balm cream or bb cream is so popular nowadays.  A lot of people using bb cream instead of liquid foundation because it's light.
*If the weather is cold you might wanna use a tinted moisturizer, because you wont sweat. Tinted moisturizer is the lightest coverage you can get. If you basically have a flawless skin, you can even use it on summer.
Suggestions:

  • The Laura Mercier Silk Creme Foundation

This is literally the best foundation ever. It is a little bit pricey but it's worth it. You can get it from lauramercier.com for $43.00

  • The Benefit Hello Flawless Oxygen Foundation
This one is so light and covers up really well. You can get it from Sephora.com or Benefitcosmetics.com for $34.00

  • Bobbi Brown Long-Wear Even Finish Foundation SPF 15 (What i'm using right now)

This foundation last literally all day long, gives a great medium coverage but buildable to full coverage. It also doesnt look cakey or anything. This is newly released last month. You can get it from bobbibrowncosmetics.com for $47.00

  • Garnier BB Cream

One of beauty gurus on youtube use this one, i dont know much about it but they said it's a great product and a cheaper one too. You can get it from Target, Walmart, CVS or any drugstore.

  • Laura Mercier Tinted Moisturizer spf 20 Oil Free
Again with Laura Mercier, but it is one of the best. It is $43.00

Step 3: Conceal
If you have any imperfections like blemishes or under eye circle you need a concealer. If you have a concealer with a wand DONT use it directly to your blemishes because the bacteria will spread. Put it on the back of your hand and slightly apply it onto your face with your finger. If you use a pot concealer dont use it on blemishes, but can be used for under eye circles. Just dab it on your under eye circles and gently blend it in with your ring finger, because your ring finger is the weakest finger and the area around your eyes is very delicate.
Suggestions:

  • The Benefit Erase Paste (what i've been using)
This is literally THE BEST under eye concealer in my opinion. It is so creamy and covers really really well. You can get it from sephora.com or benefitcosmetics.com for $26.00

  • Mac Pro Longwear Concealer

It's great for blemishes and redness. You can get it from maccosmetics.com for $18.00

Step 4: Powder
Setting powder is extremely important to set your foundation and concealer so that it will last all day and all night. There are a few types of powder. A pressed powder (good for dry&normal skin), a loose powder (great for oily skin), a translucent powder (for people who doesnt want that cake face look. It is transparent so it wont give you any color) and a foundation powder (it's great for people who want that full coverage). I basically use a foundation pressed powder because it covers better than the other ones, just dont put too much or your face will look cakey.
Suggestions:

  • Bobbi Brown Sheer Finish Pressed Powder
You can get it from bobbibrowncosmetics.com for $36.00

  • NARS Loose Powder

You can get it from narscosmetics.com or sephora.com for $35.00

  • Makeup Forever HD Micro Finish Powder

This is a lightweight translucent powder with such an amazing finish. You can get it from sephora.com or makeupforever.com for $32.00

  • Sephora Mattifying Compact Foundation (what i've been using)

It gives a great coverage and i have oily skin so anything mattifying is the best ones for me. You can get it from sephora.com for $20.00

Step 5: Set
I recommend setting your makeup for that long lasting effect with a setting spray. As you know i have oily skin so i've been using an oil control setting spray. You can also use a setting spray before you put primer and after moisturizer so that your makeup last even longer.
Suggestions:

  • Urban Decay De-Slick Oil Control Makeup Setting Spray

I love love love love this one, it really is controlling my oiliness so my face wont be shiny throughout the day. They have a travel size, a regular size and a big size. I've used the biggest bottle, you can get it from sephora.com or urbandecay.com for $34.00

  • Urban Decay All Nighter Long Lasting Makeup Setting Spray
This is great if you want your makeup to last all day long or all night long. Like for prom when you're dancing and stuff your makeup wont  fade away. So you dont have to reapply your makeup. Same price as de-slick.

  • Urban Decay Dew Me Moisturizing Makeup Setting Spray
Perfectly perfect for dry skin because it will also moisturizes your face. Urban Decay only have the regular sized bottle so it's only $29.00

And of course you can use other brand too, i just think that these makeup setting sprays are the best ones. You can use ELF setting spray for an inexpensive alternative for only $3 at Target or elfcosmetics.co.uk. But i dont know whether it's gonna crease or not.

And that is it! That's all the steps and tips that you need to know. So basically it is
Moisturize - Prime - Cover - Conceal - Powder - Set. I know it seems like so much but trust me, if you wanna get that flawless looking makeup, this will do. So after you're putting everything, make sure your eye makeup is done before spraying, and dont forget to use an eye primer so that the color will be more vibrant and it last all day long, i suggest the Urban Decay Primer Potion. I have used them and they're the best! Hope this helps a lot of you. I'm not a pro or anything, i'm just an 18-year-old makeup junkie who still learning about makeup too from the books i read, and beauty gurus from youtube! Thank you for reading and see you later fellas!
